How do we trade imperfection for perfection? Is this even possible? Everything in earth seems to be subject to death, decay and change. Permanence seems to escape us. The more we strive for stability and meaning, the more illusive our quest becomes. In a day and age of incredible ‘connectivity’ we are in a sense more disconnected than ever before. In an age of science, ever-increasing knowledge and reason, we seem to have more questions than answers.

Even truth and morality has become relative rather than absolute. One man’s truth is another man’s poison. So where do we find absolute truth? Does it really exist or do we make up truth as we go along? But if it is true that one man’s truth is another man’s poison, then how can this be absolute truth? Surely absolute truth is, after all … absolute?

Gravity comes to mind. The law of gravity is absolute – even if you do not understand it or believe it. It works every time. Oxygen is another example of absolute truth. We breath it every day but yet cannot see it. I have never seen oxygen and never will, yet we depend on it for life, every minute of every day!

Now – what about God? I have never seen God either. Does this therefore mean that he does not exist? I think not. The evidence of God exists all around us visually in creation itself. Creation is a masterpiece … a work of art … a wonder. The heavens and the earth were created with intent and design.

the human body

Just think of your own body for example:

  • Do you know that in just one square inch of skin in our body, there are around four yards of nerve fibres, one thousand three hundred nerve cells, hundred sweat glands, three million cells, and three yards of blood vessels?
  • Do you know that except for the brain cells, 50,000,000 of the cells in our body die by the time you will complete reading just this single sentence and still amazing, another 50,000,000 cells will have replaced the dead ones?
  • Do you know that an adult heart beats about 40,000,000 times in a year?
  • Scientists have termed liver as the body’s chemical factory. It performs more than 500 functions.
  • Do you know that the central nervous system is connected to every part of our body? 43 pairs of nerves are engaged in the whole process out of which 12 pairs of nerves go to and from the brain and the rest 31 pairs go from the spinal cord. Here’s the kicker – Our whole body has nerves covering a total distance of approximately 45 miles.
  • Messages from the brain to the body travel through nerves at a speed up to 248 mile per hour.

The best in the universe

’Without a doubt, the most complex information-processing system in existence is the human body. If we take all human information processes together, i.e. conscious ones (language, information-controlled, deliberate voluntary movements) and unconscious ones (information-controlled functions of the organs, hormone system), this involves the processing of 1024 bits daily. This astronomically high figure is higher by a factor of 1,000,000 [i.e., is a million times greater] than the total human knowledge of 1018 bits stored in all the world’s libraries.’

Dr Werner Gitt, in Information: The Third Fundamental Quantity, (reprint from) Siemens Review, 56(6), November/December 1989.

Trading Imperfection for Perfection

As amazing and perfect as our human body is, it is also amazing that this body will not last forever. It, like everything else on the planet, is subject to decay and will eventually stop working. So what does that mean? Is that the end of this thing called ‘life’? Or is it the beginning of something new?

tsunami wave coming towards city

The Coming Tsunami

About 2 years ago I had a dream. I was walking with a group of Christians. There was another group of people who I identified as not being Christians. They decided to not walk with our group so followed their own path rather than come along for the walk with us. Initially the walk started in the countryside and I did not see any buildings – just fields and open space. Suddenly I found myself and the group that was with me, in a major city. This was evidenced by the large skyscraper buildings, and people going about their daily business. We were somehow standing on a hill and looking down onto the city (although in another sense it felt as if we were at ground level). Suddenly I saw (in the distance behind the city scene) a very large and powerful wave coming towards the city. The people in the city were totally unaware that the massive wave was coming and went simply went about their business as usual. I remember thinking “ why do these people not see what’s coming?”. Suddenly the wave hit and destroyed everything in its path. I saw people being washed away (in some detail). I then realised that because of where we were standing, we were safe and that the wave would not reach us.  The credit crunch hit the world about six months later!

Go on - Bury Your Head in the Sand

I find the combination of financial devastation and a physical wave of water very compelling. In light of current global events, and in the context of Biblical prophesies, there is little doubt that we are rapidly moving towards the end of the age.

The Normalcy Bias

What does this have to do with the coming Tsunamis of financial collapse, extreme changes in weather patterns, cosmic disturbance in the heavens, chaos on the earth which will all be signs of the end of this age? The normalcy bias refers to a mental state people enter when facing a disaster. It causes people to underestimate both the possibility of a disaster occurring and its possible effects. This often results in situations where people fail to adequately prepare for a disaster, and on a larger scale, the failure of the government to include the populace in its disaster preparations. The assumption that is made in the case of the normalcy bias is that since a disaster never has occurred that it never will occur. It also results in the inability of people to cope with a disaster once it occurs. People with a normalcy bias have difficulties reacting to something they have not experienced before. People also tend to interpret warnings in the most optimistic way possible, seizing on any ambiguities to infer a less serious situation.

Effects

The normalcy bias often results in unnecessary deaths in disaster situations. The lack of preparation for disasters often leads to inadequate shelter, supplies, and evacuation plans. Even when all these things are in place, individuals with a normalcy bias often refuse to leave their homes. Studies have shown that more than 70% of people check with others before deciding to evacuate.

The normalcy bias also causes people to drastically underestimate the effects of the disaster. Therefore, they think that everything will be all right, while information from the radio, television, or neighbors gives them reason to believe there is a risk. This creates a cognitive dissonance that they then must work to eliminate. Some manage to eliminate it by refusing to believe new warnings coming in and refusing to evacuate (maintaining the normalcy bias), while others eliminate the dissonance by escaping the danger. The possibility that some may refuse to evacuate causes significant problems in disaster planning.

Examples of this principle in action

Jewish Populations in World War I

hitlerThis is a excerpt from a book written by Barton Briggs – Wealth, War & Wisdom. He says: “By the end of 1935, 100,000 Jews had left Germany, but 450,000 still remained. Wealthy Jewish families … kept thinking and hoping that the worst was over. Many of the German Jews, brilliant, cultured, and cosmopolitan as they were, were too complacent. They had been in Germany for so long and were so well established, they simply could not believe there was going to be a crisis that would endanger the them. They were too comfortable. They believed that the Nazis’ anti-semitism  was an episodic event and that Hitler’s bark was worse than his bite.  They reacted sluggishly to the rise of Hitler, for completely understandable reasons. Events moved much faster than they could imagine.”

Just think about what was going on at this time. Jews were arrested, beaten, taxed, robbed, and jailed for no reason other than that of practising a particular religion.  As a result they were shipped off to concentration camps. Their businesses were seized. Yet most Jews still did not leave Germany because they simply did not believe that things could get as bad as they did. Quoting again from Barton Briggs’ book: “This is the most tragic example of the devastating effects of the normalcy bias the world has ever seen.”

Hurricane Katrina

hurricane katrinaThe same thing happened with Hurricane Katrina. Even though it became clear that the levee system was not going to work, tens of thousands of people stayed in their homes, directly in the line of the coming waves of water. As a result, nearly 2,000 residents perished.

In both these cases, these people never thought that these things could happen to them or in their countries. Once again, this is how the normalcy bias works. We simply refuse to see the evidence that it right in front of our face. because it is unlike anything we have experienced before. The normalcy bias kicks in and we continue to go about our lives as if nothing is unusual and out of the ordinary.

This is further evidenced by an event in the Bible. God saw that the earth had become corrupt and was filled with violence. He decided that he was going to destroy all living creatures on the earth, along with the earth and he told a man called Noah about his plan. He said to Noah “Look! I am about to cover the earth with a flood that will destroy every living thing that breathes. Everything on earth will die.” (Gen 6:17).

Noah had to decide whether he believed this direct warning from God and whether he would prepare himself accordingly, (in obedience to God). “So Noah did everything exactly as God had commanded him.” (Gen 6:22). Then, what God had warned Noah about, came: “For forty days the flood waters grew deeper, covering the ground and lifting the boat high above the earth. As the waters rose higher and higher above the ground, the boat floated safely on the surface. Finally the waters covered even the highest mountains on the earth, rising more than twenty-two feet above the highest peaks. All the living things on earth died – birds, domestic animals, wild animals, small animals that scurry along the ground and all the people.  … All were destroyed. The only people who survived were Noah and those with him in the boat. And the flood waters covered the earth for 150 days.” (Gen 7:17-24)

We can well imagine the response of people on the earth at this time when they saw Noah preparing for a catastrophic event that seemed very far-fetched and very unlikely to happen.  It is interesting to note that the Bible refers to the story of Noah as a lesson from history.

Matthew 24:37-43 “

37 As it was in the days of Noah, so it will be at the coming of the Son of Man. 38 For in the days before the flood, people were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, up to the day Noah entered the ark; 39 and they knew nothing about what would happen until the flood came and took them all away. That is how it will be at the coming of the Son of Man. 40 Two men will be in the field; one will be taken and the other left. 41 Two women will be grinding with a hand mill; one will be taken and the other left. 42 “Therefore keep watch, because you do not know on what day your Lord will come.43 But understand this: If the owner of the house had known at what time of night the thief was coming, he would have kept watch and would not have let his house be broken into.”

The Bible also has more to say about complacency:

Proverbs 1:32

For the waywardness of the simple will kill them, and the complacency of fools will destroy them;

Ezekiel 30:9

“‘On that day messengers will go out from me in ships to frighten Cush out of hercomplacency. Anguish will take hold of them on the day of Egypt’s doom, for it is sure to come.

What Does The Bible Say About The Future?

Matthew 13:39

and the enemy who sows them is the devil. The harvest is the end of the age, and the harvesters are angels.

Matthew 13:40

“As the weeds are pulled up and burned in the fire, so it will be at the end of theage.

Matthew 13:49

This is how it will be at the end of the age. The angels will come and separate the wicked from the righteous

Matthew 24:3

3 As Jesus was sitting on the Mount of Olives, the disciples came to him privately. “Tell us,” they said, “when will this happen, and what will be the sign of your coming and of the end of the age?”

4 Jesus answered: “Watch out that no one deceives you. 5 For many will come in my name, claiming, ‘I am the Messiah,’ and will deceive many. 6 You will hear of wars and rumors of wars, but see to it that you are not alarmed. Such things must happen, but the end is still to come. 7 Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be famines and earthquakes in various places. 8 All these are the beginning of birth pains.

Matthew 28:20

and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”

Jesus is Coming

jesus is coming

The Bible gives us many warnings of what will come upon the earth in future. Every person on earth has to decide whether or not to take the warnings and claims of the Bible seriously and there will always be sceptics that will reject any warnings arguments of coming danger. The good news is that God has made a way of escape from the judgement that is coming upon the earth. Furthermore, the decision we make for or against Jesus Christ will determine our eternal destiny. Jesus himself said that the only way to enter the Kingdom of God is to be born again – not of the flesh (i.e. not by way of natural childbirth) but a spiritual rebirth.

You Must Be Born Again

2 He came to Jesus at night and said, “Rabbi, we know that you are a teacher who has come from God. For no one could perform the signs you are doing if God were not with him.” 3 Jesus replied, “Very truly I tell you, no one can see the kingdom of God unless they are born again.” 4 “How can someone be born when they are old?” Nicodemus asked. “Surely they cannot enter a second time into their mother’s womb to be born!” 5 Jesus answered, “Very truly I tell you, no one can enter the kingdom of God unless they are born of water and the Spirit. 6 Flesh gives birth to flesh, but the Spirit gives birth to spirit. 7 You should not be surprised at my saying, ‘You must be born again.’ 8The wind blows wherever it pleases. You hear its sound, but you cannot tell where it comes from or where it is going. So it is with everyone born of the Spirit.” 9 “How can this be?” Nicodemus asked. 10 “You are Israel’s teacher,” said Jesus, “and do you not understand these things? 11Very truly I tell you, we speak of what we know, and we testify to what we have seen, but still you people do not accept our testimony. 12 I have spoken to you of earthly things and you do not believe; how then will you believe if I speak of heavenly things?13 No one has ever gone into heaven except the one who came from heaven—the Son of Man. 14 Just as Moses lifted up the snake in the wilderness, so the Son of Man must be lifted up, 15 that everyone who believes may have eternal life in him.” 16 For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. 17 For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. 18 Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because they have not believed in the name of God’s one and only Son. 19 This is the verdict: Light has come into the world, but people loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil. 20 Everyone who does evil hates the light, and will not come into the light for fear that their deeds will be exposed.

the truth will set you freeToday truth is a very scarce commodity. People do not want to hear the truth – they would rather hear something that makes them feel good, something they want to believe, something that allows them to relax in their comfort zone. Today, the vast majority of people have great difficulty discerning the true from the false, good from evil, morality from immorality.

We live in a day when governments, politicians, monetary authorities and he media consistently lie to the people and the people are indifferent to these lies, even if hey are vaguely aware they they are being deceived.

Winston Churchill once said:

Most people, sometimes in their lives, stumble upon the truth. Most jump up, brush themselves off, and hurry on about their business as if nothing had happened.

To most people, the world is a jumbled mass of conflicting and confusing ideologies without rhyme or purpose! That is true on the surface – and who today looks beyond the surface, at what is really happening? Very few indeed!

This was a question that even Pontius Pilate asked Jesus almost two thousand years ago:

pontius pilate and jesus

Pontius Pilate and Jesus

John 18:37-39

37 “You are a king, then!” said Pilate. Jesus answered, “You say that I am a king. In fact, the reason I was born and came into the world is to testify to the truth. Everyone on the side of truth listens to me.” 38 “What is truth?” retorted Pilate.

John 14:6

Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.

Luke 20:21

So the spies questioned him: “Teacher, we know that you speak and teach what is right, and that you do not show partiality but teach the way of God in accordance with the truth.

2 Corinthians 4:2
Rather, we have renounced secret and shameful ways; we do not use deception, nor do we distort the word of God. On the contrary, by setting forth the truth plainly we commend ourselves to everyone’s conscience in the sight of God.

2 Thessalonians 2:10
and all the ways that wickedness deceives those who are perishing. They perish because they refused to love the truth and so be saved.

Henry Ford the great auto pioneer put it very well when he said:

“The truth is frequently depressing; the truth sometimes seems to be evil, but it has the eternal advantage, it is the truth and what is built thereon neither brings nor yields to confusion”

We know that politicians and governments consistently lie to their people. Machiavelli said that “it is the purpose of governments to lie to the people the great majority of the time,” and Hitler said, “tell a lie, tell it often enough and the people will believe it.”

That our media lie and manipulate and distort the truth should be obvious to any thinking person. John Swinton, editor of The New York Times, said at a dinner of the American Press Association in 1914: “There is no such thing as an independent press in America … Not a man among you dares to utter his honest opinion … You know beforehand that it would never appear in print. It is  the duty of New York journalists to lie, to revile, to toady at the feet of Mammon, and to sell his country and his race for his daily bread. We are the tools and the vassals of the rich behind the scenes, We are marionettes. These men pull the strings and we dance. Our time, our talents, our lives, and our capacities are all the property of these men – we are intellectual prostitutes.”

A lie cannot stand on it’s own. It must, by it’s very nature, be propped up by another lie. They,in turn, must be supported by additional lies. Such practice very quickly develops into a jumbled mess of deceit and chicanery in which truth becomes increasingly blurred within the passage of time. We live in the“day of the lie,” in the day of the secular humanist, when traditional values of right vs. wrong, freedom vs. slavery, morality vs. immorality, truth vs. falsehood, have been reversed and redefined in secular humanist terms so that Communism is now “benign and harmless”; sodomy is simply and “alternative lifestyle“; and the abortion of 60 million babies is defined as free choice instead of murder. The great majority can no longer discern good from evil nor the true from the false – everything has become a blur of gray.

There is, however, a minority (a remnant) of right thinking, discerning people in every nation who continue to seek the truth and who are willing to defend it and take a stand against evil. This is why the alternate media has emerged – to attempt to preserve truth in a sea of darkness, confusion and falsehood.

With all this being so, the oldest and most reliable source of the truth is the Bible. It has withstood the attacks and tests of the ages. And when confusion and falsehood reign supreme, as they do today, wisdom, discernment, and truth can still be found in history’s most widely read and best selling book. What is truth?

Jesus said

“I am the way, the truth and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.” (John 14:6)

John 8:44
You belong to your father, the devil, and you want to carry out your father’s desires. He was a murderer from the beginning, not holding to the truth, for there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks his native language, for he is a liar and thefather of lies.

Which way will you choose?

truth and lies

Micah 6:12
Your rich people are violent; your inhabitants are liars and their tongues speak deceitfully.

1 Timothy 1:10
for the sexually immoral, for those practicing homosexuality, for slave traders andliars and perjurers—and for whatever else is contrary to the sound doctrine

1 Timothy 4:2
Such teachings come through hypocritical liars, whose consciences have been seared as with a hot iron.

Revelation 21:8
But the cowardly, the unbelieving, the vile, the murderers, the sexually immoral, those who practice magic arts, the idolaters and all liars—they will be consigned to the fiery lake of burning sulfur. This is the second death.”

Romans 6:23
For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

We are grieved by the disaster that has hit Japan and it’s people. This is a massive disaster that will change the lives of many people for many years to come, if not forever. We live in an age of unpredictability. Although it is an age of technological advances, unparalleled productivity, travel and vastly accelerated learning, it is also a time of great trouble and turbulance all over the earth.

After watching recent events in Egypt, Libya and now Saudi Arabia, I was reminded of the words of Daniel in the Bible:

Daniel 12

The End Times

1 “At that time Michael, the great prince who protects your people, will arise. There will be a time of distress such as has not happened from the beginning of nations until then. But at that time your people—everyone whose name is found written in the book—will be delivered. 2 Multitudes who sleep in the dust of the earth will awake: some to everlasting life, others to shame and everlasting contempt. 3 Those who are wise will shine like the brightness of the heavens, and those who lead many to righteousness, like the stars for ever and ever. 4 But you, Daniel, roll up and seal the words of the scroll until the time of the end. Many will go here and there to increase knowledge.”

5 Then I, Daniel, looked, and there before me stood two others, one on this bank of the river and one on the opposite bank. 6 One of them said to the man clothed in linen, who was above the waters of the river, “How long will it be before these astonishing things are fulfilled?” 7 The man clothed in linen, who was above the waters of the river, lifted his right hand and his left hand toward heaven, and I heard him swear by him who lives forever, saying, “It will be for a time, times and half a time. When the power of the holy people has been finally broken, all these things will be completed.”

8 I heard, but I did not understand. So I asked, “My lord, what will the outcome of all this be?”

9 He replied, “Go your way, Daniel, because the words are rolled up and sealed until the time of the end. 10 Many will be purified, made spotless and refined, but the wicked will continue to be wicked. None of the wicked will understand, but those who are wise will understand.

11 “From the time that the daily sacrifice is abolished and the abomination that causes desolation is set up, there will be 1,290 days. 12 Blessed is the one who waits for and reaches the end of the 1,335 days.

13 “As for you, go your way till the end. You will rest, and then at the end of the days you will rise to receive your allotted inheritance.”
